  • Froome untouchable in time trial as he extends Vuelta a España lead

Stefan Denifl was victorious on Stage 17 of the 2017 Vuelta a Espana on Wednesday, but it was a hard day for overall leader Chris Froome, who lost significant time.

The four-time Tour de France champ is still favourite to do a Grand Tour double but is set to come under more attacks before the finish in Madrid.

CHRIS Froome suffered a setback on his La Vuelta title bid, losing ground to chief rival Vincenzo Nibali as Stefan Denifl handed Aqua Blue Sport their maiden stage victory.

Froome, coming off a comfortable time-trial victory on Tuesday, was struggling as he rode up the steep Los Machucos hill at the end of the 180.5-kilometer stage.

While it is still possible for all the chasers to get the top of the overall standings, Stage 16 fits for Froome for it is an individual time trial.

Dutchman Wilco Kelderman (Team Sunweb), in fourth overall, Steven Kruijswijk (LottoNL-Jumbo) and Tejay van Garderen (BMC) are all strong time trialists and will be looking to gain seconds. Everything can happen every day. The climb was flawless for me. "I think we always knew today was going to be a though final and it certainly was". Now I've won a stage at La Vuelta. I accelerated to get back to him, I felt good behind him and when I saw him suffer in a steep section, I had no doubts. "It's incredible. It's the best day of my cycling life".

The Aqua Blue rider resisted a late challenge from Alberto Contador to take victory in a thrilling finish, with Froome suffering after a gruelling day in testing conditions.

Thursday's 18th stage will take riders 169 kilometers (105 miles) from Suances to Santo Toribio de Liebana.
